Price: USD 1,900.00.
A four-day trek of medium to high difficulty hiking through forests and glacial moraines with fantastic views of Cerro Torre, Mount Fitz Roy, surrounding mountains, and glaciers.
Three of the most well-known excursions in the Chaltén area are “Laguna de los Tres”, a lagoon with blue waters located just below the east face of Fitz Roy with its vertical rock wall of 1200 meters. “Laguna Torre” from where you can see Glaciar Grande, Cordón Adela, and Cerro Torre. And lastly, the trek to the summit of Pliegue Tumbado, from where in addition to Laguna Torre you can see both mountains simultaneously from almost a thousand meters high. To start this all out, we add a view of the north face of the Fitz Roy Massif and the magic of a historical mountain refuge.
The trek is spread out over four days to allow us to visit the park's most popular viewpoints without returning to town, thereby shortening the distances and extending our stay in some of the most beautiful places on earth!
Camping also reduces the hiking distances as we won’t need to go up and down the same trails, allowing us more time to enjoy the places we visit.
DAY 1 - LAGUNA AND GLACIAR POLLONE
We start our day by transferring from El Chaltén to the Puente del Río Eléctrico, a journey of approximately 40 minutes along Provincial Route 41. From this bridge, the starting point of our adventure, we will start out on the trail that we will follow for approximately two hours, surrounded by lush lenga forests and following the course of the Eléctrico River valley.
We will reach the historic Piedra del Fraile Refuge, a place with cultural significance as it was a refuge for Father de Agostini during his exploration of the area, and it will be our refuge on the first night of this journey. After leaving our backpacks at the refuge, we will continue along the right bank of the Eléctrico River, this can be a more challenging trek due to strong winds coming from the Ice Field. From here, we will gain a unique perspective of Cerro Fitz Roy, with views towards its North face.
After walking for just over an hour, we will encounter the impressive Laguna and Pollone Glacier. Here, weather permitting, we will enjoy our lunch surrounded by the majesty of these mountains and glaciers.
We return via the same trail and stay at the Piedra del Fraile Refuge. Here we will enjoy our night there, with a pleasant dinner at our camp, ready to spend our first night in the forest.
Distance: 11 km Duration: approx. 5 hrs
DAY 2 - LAGUNA DE LOS TRES
We start the day very early with a delicious breakfast and organize ourselves to start our hike again. This time we head towards Poincenot Camp.
We begin our hike back along the same trail we traveled the previous day. During the journey, we can observe different glaciers such as Marconi, Eléctrico, Cagliero, and in the distance, Vespignani.
Once we connect with the trail that leads us to our next camp we start a gentle ascent through the forest until we reach the Mirador del Glaciar Piedras Blancas, continuing towards Poincenot Camp. From here we will see the massive granite needles rise in the distance. These peaks were once climbed by the boldest of climbers including Saint Exupéry, Poincenot, Fitz Roy, Mermoz, and Guillaumet, among others.
Once at camp, we leave our backpacks and continue towards the next adventure, the impressive Laguna de los Tres. After leaving the camp behind and crossing a beautiful bridge over the Río Blanco, we face the most demanding kilometer, characterized by a 400-meter elevation gain. Along this stretch, we ascend constantly; depending on the time of year, we may encounter ice or snow on the trail. The journey's reward is the continuous panoramic views that accompany us along the way, culminating in a breathtaking landscape after crossing the glacial moraine.
After a lunch break and time to absorb the immensity of the views, we begin the return to the camp. Once settled in our camping spot, we will enjoy a snack and later dinner, spending another magical night surrounded by vastness of Patagonia.
Distance: 15 km Duration: approx. 7 hrs
DAY 3 - LAGUNA TORRE
We will wake up early to appreciate the magic of the sunrise over the surrounding peaks. Recovered from the previous day, we will enjoy breakfast and continue our journey towards the beautiful Lagunas Madre e Hija.
This stretch of the trail is mostly flat, then descends to join the Laguna Torre trail and will take us to our next campsite. When we arrive, the comfort of the camping area will be waiting for us to leave our backpacks and continue for about 2 km to reach the impressive view of Laguna and Cerro Torre.
As we approach the Laguna, we will witness icebergs floating in its waters, resulting from the breaking of Glaciar Grande. From there, weather permitting, we will have the opportunity to ascend to the Maestri viewpoint, adding an additional 1 kilometer to our hike. From this point, we can enjoy a well-deserved rest to once again admire the panoramic views.
We return along the same trail back to our camp, to relax and enjoy another magical night under the stars.
Distance: 12 km Duration: approx.5 hrs
DAY 4 - EL CHALTÉN
After breakfast we will start out on our last day of this epic journey. We head towards the source of the Fitz Roy River, where the exciting zipline awaits us. Hanging from a harness, we cross the river on a taut rope before ascending once again on the trail through the forest.
We cross Paso Las Agachonas towards the summit of Pliegue Tumbado, where we will be rewarded with exceptional views of the peaks of Cerro Solo, Cerro Torre, and Fitz Roy.
Our adventure culminates with a descent towards the town of El Chalten along the trail that leads us to the National Parks Information Center. As this adventure comes to a close we know you will take home unforgettable memories and a deep connection with the wild and majestic nature of Patagonia.
